Imagine an existence where your pain is unpredictable, unbearable and ignored by those who you must look to for its remedies. Sickle cell warriors live with the reality that their inherited genetic disorder carries physical pain, harmful social stigmas and all too common discriminatory experiences in many areas of their life.

These experiences cut deep and result in emotional and mental scars that remain as a testament to the strength of sickle cell warriors but also the neglect of important societal institutions.

The artwork and imagery of this exhibition was commissioned and curated to illustrate the diverse and vast challenges endured and most importantly survived by sickle cell warriors across the globe. We encourage you to think deeply and earnestly as you observe the strength and the scars of the sickle cell community.

Hand-Foot Syndrome

The syndrome appears suddenly between infancy and 5 years of age and causes painful swelling in the hands and feet of babies and child patients and that can last about 2 weeks.

Jaundice

Jaundice is a common sign and symptom of sickle disease. Sickle cells do not live as long as normal red blood cells and, therefore, they are dying faster than the liver can filter them out causing the eyes to appear yellow hue.

Pain Crisis

The vaso-occlusive crisis is the hallmark symptom of sickle cell disease and is caused by blockages in the veins and can affect any part of the body without notice.

Cells Of Time

Sickle cell patients often endure long wait times in emergency rooms while in excruciating pain. Also, because of the lack of research surrounding the disease, the life span of those living with sickle cell disease is significantly shorter than those who don’t carry the disease.
